Thematic School: remote sensing and biodiversity

The Labex CEBA is organising its thematic school on remote sensing and its potential uses in the study of biodiversity. It will be held at the Hotel des Roches in Kourou (French Guiana) as from the 25th to the 29th of September 2017.

Various national and international speakers are expected to attend this thematic school on remote sensing for tropical biodiversity mapping and management across scales. It adresses in priority young researchers (PhD students and post-doctoral researchers) interested in exploring the potentials of remote sensing. For instance, canopy heterogeneity is correlated with insect diversity in tropical forests and canopy moisture is a proxy of amphibian diversity. Environmental variables can also be coupled with biodiversity occurrence data using species distribution modelling. These techniques have a direct implication for the management of tropical ecosystems, as they help prioritise areas for conservation.

Working sessions and lectures are scheduled throughout the week as well as a field trip to the Paracou station. The lecturers are researchers from English, Dutch, French and US universities. To attend the thematic school, candidates must apply before the 12th of July 2017. The application consists of sending 2 pdf files of: 1). the curriculum vitae and 2). a cover letter describing a research project proposal and the nature of available datasets. The program covers accommodation, meals and transportation costs in French Guiana but not travel costs to French Guiana. Applications should be addressed to Jessica Delhaye (jessica.delhaye@univ-tlse3.fr).
