Presentation

In April 2018, the Land Cover SEC has published a second Land Cover Map for mainland France. It was automatically produced using Sentinel-2 data from late 2015 to late 2016 and Landsat-8 data. It proposes an actualization of the first land cover map for mainland France produced in march 2017 using Sentinel-2 data from late 2015 to late 2016 and Landsat-8 data.

The 2017 and the 2016 Land Cover Maps use both a 10-m resolution and a nomenclature of 17 classes:

  • annual summer crops: 11
  • annual winter crops: 12
  • broad-leaved forest: 31
  • coniferous forest: 32
  • natural grasslands: 34
  • woody moorlands: 36
  • continuous urban fabric : 41
  • discontinuous urban fabric: 42
  • industial and commercial units: 43
  • road surfaces: 44
  • bare rock: 45
  • beaches, dunes and sand plains: 46
  • water bodies: 51
  • glaciers and perpetual snow: 53
  • intensive grasslands: 211
  • orchard: 221
  • vineyards: 222

The land cover maps produced annually will be provided by Theia.
