Summer School Developing the Use of SENTINEL Satellite Constellation for Monitoring of Inland Water Quality

5 June 2023 @ 8h00 9 June 2023 @ 17h00

For the second year, Theia Colours of Continental Waters SEC team is proposing a summer school on the monitoring of the colour and quality of continental waters. The training will be held in English, from 5 to 9 June 2023, at the Geosciences Environment Toulouse laboratory (Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées, Toulouse, France).

The Sentinel satellites launched under the European COPERNICUS programme provide an unprecedented data flow for environmental observation. These satellites allow the development of new innovative applications such as the monitoring of continental water quality: rivers, lakes, lagoons and estuaries.

This training course aims to present how the data from the Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellites can be used to obtain cartographic products on key water quality parameters with applications related to the study of soil erosion, sediment transport, eutrophication of water bodies, aquatic carbon fluxes or disaster monitoring. During 5 days, the courses will present theoretical aspects on the optical properties of water, the steps of satellite image processing, but also practical aspects with the realization of optical measurements as well as the manipulation of images and finalized products.

The course is aimed at a large audience: researchers, doctoral or post-doctoral students, professionals in the water sector (basin agencies, environmental departments, etc.) from France or abroad. Travel/accommodation costs can be covered for a limited number of participants.

This training is financed by the FP-CUP programme of the European Commission, the CNRS and the IRD.
