Thesaurus and vocabularies

THEIA Thesaurus

To facilitate data classification and discovery, variable and thematic categories, platform types and instruments are described using controlled vocabularies. For platforms and instruments, keywords are taken from the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD).

As part of a FAIRisation initiative, an in situ THEIA vocabulary has been published under the DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s12145-024-01373-
It is available at: https://w3id.org/ozcar-theia/

The THEIA|OZCAR in situ thesaurus currently presents variable names and objects of interest in the critical zone in a hierarchical manner. It is aligned with other reference thesauri in the field of environmental sciences (EnvThes, GEMET, etc.). It implements the I-ADOPT (InteroperAble Descriptions of Observable Property Terminologies) ontology, which allows variables to be described accurately (see details in Coussot et al., Earth Systems Informatics, 2024). Published in 2018, this thesaurus evolves in line with the needs of scientists who feed products and data into the THEIA| OZCAR information system.

A THEIA spatial vocabulary is currently being developed. A beta version is already available:
https://skosmos.msem.univ-montp2.fr/theia_spatial/en/

This will facilitate their alignment with other vocabularies (e.g. those of other Data Terra thematic hubs).

Developments continue with the following main objectives:

  • Continue implementing FAIR principles
  • Facilitate interoperability between THEIA Data and services centres and with our partners.
